SECURITY PRINCIPLES

C.I.A. – The triad of Network Security and Data Protection

Confidentiality

The goal of confidentiality is to prevent or minimize unauthorized access to and disclosure of data and information. The cost of a breach of certain data can far outweigh the cost to secure it. An example of this would be banking, payroll or medical records.

Integrity

The goal of maintaining integrity is very simple; it is to ensure that the data being worked with is the correct data. Organizations work with and make decisions using the data they have available. If this information is not accurate or has been tampered with by an unauthorized person, the consequences can be devastating. Again, payroll, financial and medical records are prime targets.

Availability

The term availability is used to describe data protection and the prevention of losing data. Data that cannot be accessed is of no value. Loss of data can cause havoc in any organization. A safe, secure network is designed with maximum data availability in mind while always ensuring both the confidentiality and integrity of that data.
